Marry in Haste: 15 short stories of dating, love & marriage – Kindle edition by Young, Debbie Young has a reputation for wry, witty fiction full of gentle English.

To me it sounded like the future—and I, as a writer who believes in exploring new storytelling tools, wanted a piece of it. Back in , I stepped away from fiction, frustrated at going over the same old ground creatively and professionally and unable to start a new project without obsessing over who might publish it. I felt like a rickety snowblower trying to chew its way through half-frozen slush. I disappeared down the rabbit hole of interactivity, soaking up concepts about polylinear narrative, computational dialogue generation, and story systems managed by biofeedback.

With those two projects, I got to see the world with my work—Singapore, Hong Kong, Norway, England—and I felt Calvino would have been proud of me for living his maxim. There are multiple stories going across at several different times. But people on Pluto wouldn’t use the Earth calendar; they would use their own system. When those people talk about dates, what should they say? How can I convey to my readers the dates of these various events and the relationships among them when the calendar systems used by the characters would be different? PS: I don’t want something confusing like the Stardate system.

I don’t want to be explaining to my reader how my calendar works. This was how Tolkien did it, so you’d be in good company. If you have characters on Terra and characters on Pluto who meet, they’re going to have to work out some way of syncing their calendars. At the beginning of a chapter, just announce as part of the header what the date is:.

Conscientiously wrought fiction, always capable in scheme and technique, less often strongly involving. Maybe the most moving piece here is “On The Rainy River,” about a draftee’s ambivalence about going, and how he decided to go: “I would go to war—I would kill and maybe die—because I was embarrassed not to. They make this an annoyingly arty book, hiding more than not behind Hemingwayesque time-signatures and puerile repetitions about war and memory and everything else, for that matter being hell and heaven both.

A disappointment. Visionary speculative stories that will change the way readers see themselves and the world around them: This book delivers A time-travel fantasy set largely in ancient Baghdad, the story follows fabric merchant Fuwaad ibn Abbas after he meets an alchemist who has crafted what is essentially a time portal. After hearing life-changing stories about others who have used the portal, he decides to go back in time to try to right a terrible wrong—and realizes, too late, that nothing can erase the past.

I missed the boat on the first wave of the dating app trend. And even after I bit the bullet and downloaded one for the first time, I still had a hard time getting on board with the whole idea of swimming through a sea of unknown faces to decide which one I might like to meet and ultimately, what, maybe even have sex with? But eventually, thanks to some good-natured nagging from my friends, I came around and took the plunge.

Met a few of the faces, went on a few dates, even had a nice little fling blossom from one of those encounters. The overall experience was surprisingly enjoyable. Especially whenever I leave town; I find that I get really curious about what the foreign waters might look and feel like.

And you need all the references and explanations of technology, style, and even health care to shine with accuracy. But you also have reason to proceed with caution—because you might be accidentally writing dated fiction.
